The 19th MONSTRA exhibition, in partnership with the Museu da Marioneta, takes us behind the scenes of Latvian animation puppets and Anim?cijas Brig?de, a studio in Riga that has produced more than 140 films since its inception in 1966 by master Arnolds Burovs. We only have until 19 April to discover the secrets of Latvian animation.

This exhibition gathers artworks and documents from the private collection of Vasco Granja, one of the most well-known disseminators of animation cinema in Portugal. Around 125 drawings, on paper and acetate, from legendary filmmakers of animation cinema, will be on display

The 25th edition of the festival hosts the world premiere of ‘Virgin Fandango’ by director Marcy Page, a Portugal-Canada co-production by Ciclope Filmes and the National Film Board. The film uses Portuguese tiles as elements of animation. Some of the 12000 tiles used in the production of the film are a tribute and ode to women, and are on display in the windows of Cinema São Jorge between 12th and 22nd March.

Every year, the Portuguese Competition showcases the best of Portuguese animation. To illustrate this session, Cinema São Jorge is hosting an exhibition of posters from the films in competition, where visitors can admire the graphic design of each film presented in the art of the posters.

In collaboration with The Portuguese Center for Serigraphy, MONSTRA has curated a series of screen prints by leading Portuguese animation artists, inspired by images from major national films. At MONSTRA 2026, we are exhibiting works already published by João Gonzalez ('Ice Merchants'), Laura Gonçalves and Alexandra Ramires ('Percebes'), Regina Pessoa ('Tio Tomás, a Contabilidade dos Dias'), José Miguel Ribeiro ('Nayola'), and Abi Feijó ('Fado Lusitano').
