I asked the composer T?ru Takemitsu, “Do you have something I could use?” He handed me a tape and said, “Maybe this will do.” When I listened to it, it was just groaning sounds—“ahh” and “uhh.” Around that time, there was a shop nearby that kept monkeys and chickens, and I could hear their cries while working. That gave me an idea: what if I put humans inside a zoo and added Takemitsu’s music? And wouldn’t it be interesting if, inside the cage, a woman defeated a man?
