Freedom of Expression – Itinerary of a Lonely Walker through Dictatorship and Freedom

One of the most important figures in Portuguese animation, José Xavier spent most of his career in France because, as he puts it: “there was an old man in Portugal in the 1960s who didn’t like people, especially creative ones, and didn’t like what he was doin”, so he emigrated.

This masterclass focuses on Xavier’s work, starting from his early career in Portugal, particularly in advertising, to his later work in France, where he developed a unique line of thought and creativity in European and Portuguese animation. The film editor plays a central role in the creation of
great animated films in all styles, genres, and lengths.
Yet the contribution of the editor is often overlooked or
misunderstood. This master class will review the
surprising ways editors shape animation, many of
which would be impossible in live action film. Based on his
experience starting the Editorial & Post Production
department at Pixar, and producing animation today in
Paris, Bill Kinder will demonstrate the impact of editors
on story, character, staging, composition, and sound
using examples from works in progress of celebrated
films. At the conclusion of the class, anyone

National and International Co-Productions

Co-productions are essential for the existence of more “industrial” animation works. Feature films or series would be impossible to make in Portugal or Europe without these resources. In this round table, with the help of Susana Costa Pereira (Creative Europe), we will present the existing support modalities in Europe and will know some practical realities through the testimonies of several national and international producers present. The debate will be open to all.
