Imagine, however, a Walpurgisnacht, in which animated footsteps indicate spirit presences, goblins and hobgoblins appear and disappear and tumble fantastically, scarecrows do a fandango with their shadows on empty hillsides, white horses and black tear across high heaven, and skeletons walk.
