A cow is lazily chewing its cud on a field. Tiny Toot pets its muzzle, which is soft and warm. The cow’s drinking trough is empty, so Pixie finds a garden hose and fills up the trough so the cow can drink. A cow pat falls on Gato’s head, so Tiny Toot and Pixie have to hose Gato clean before they can go home.

Akiko is an unusual girl. Her imagination is bigger than this world and her different view on the world often gets her into trouble. That doesn’t make her her teacher’s favorite student. The conflict between them grows when Akiko responds to the theme of Winter magic in the most unusual way during the art class.

On the top of a hill, over a sea of clouds lives little Ugo the penguin. From there, he dreamily watches birds soaring in the sky above his town. Among them is the postman-eagle, who majestically and professionally flies delivering packages and letters to everyone. Ugo longs to be a postman like the eagle, but there's a problem: his fins are not suited for flying. Despite this Ugo doesn't get discouraged and creates a device that allows him to fly, but something is missing: the safety equipment.

A young dinosaur named Billy and his mother live during the Mesozoic era. One day a crocodile appears and Billy's mother eats it to protect him. Billy, feeling frightened but safe, climbs onto his mother's back and urges her to move. Mind the Gap

Mind the Gap is a piece about London, depicting people walking around or traveling from one place to another. It also reflects the composer's personal journey through the city, as he observed how people have been conditioned to follow traffic lights or signs like "Mind the gap," "Stand on the right," "Walk on the left," and so on. The work is divided into four short movements, each corresponding to a specific sign or direction. The outer movements (I and IV) are written for the left and right sides of the marimba, respectively. The performer attempts to move away from the original register, but the music "pushes" them to stay either on the left or right, returning to the original position.

Frame by frame by frame, Paul Wenninger makes the rounds, standing still, in an initially completely empty salon, with his back perpetually turned to the walls – and above all, to the windows. A stormy time seems to fly by while the relationship between outside and inside gets shaken up, even if the exterior views granted to the observer largely consist of projections: trees, beaches, parks shot in high-speed, time-lapse mode.

Using single frame editing, primarily focused on sound, the realistic film image transforms into a surreal, structuralist and finally abstract film. In the end, the illusions of their desires are just showy but ephemeral alters, which will eventually collapse and vanish into thin air, like smoke in a fire.

In English, “trespass” means to intrude, but it could also be an unauthorized entry, or in legal jargon, a “domestic disturbance.” ‘Trespass’ (2012), Paul Wenninger’s ten-minute real-animation film plays with all of these meanings in a technically impressive, varied, and precise tour de force.

Uncanny Valley

In ‘Uncanny Valley’ (2015) we experience the intense psychological and physical battle fought between desperate soldiers during World War I. This film develops a dramaturgy of the image, a stuttering picture that interrupts the narrative structure of the scenic sequence. Each frame of this animated live-action piece reveals its own painful yet detailed moment, resistant to the synthetic image of history. The culminating effect of the narrative performance reveals the numbing futility of war, the agony of conflict and survival, the discovery of brotherhood, and madness of it all.

Dead Reckoning

A meditation on bad luck. Two animated manifestations of one character interact as he abides by the rule: “Eat, drink and be merry, for tomorrow we die”. Represented in corporeal form by pixelated live-action, our character journeys through a city. After falling on hard times, a drawn emergence of his mortality guides him to his final destination.

A dancer-turned-filmmaker avoids unnecessary movement in a villa in Brittany, embodying a state described by Paul Virilio as “Polar Inertia”. Frame by frame by frame, Paul Wenninger makes the rounds, standing still, in an initially completely empty salon, with his back perpetually turned to the walls – and above all, to the windows. A stormy time seems to fly by while the relationship between outside and inside gets shaken up, even if the exterior views granted to the observer largely consist of projections: trees, beaches, parks shot in high-speed, time-lapse mode.

Far, far away, there are endless fields overgrown with weeds. Amidst these fields, there is a hidden garden full of beautiful cultivated flowers. One day, a mighty storm comes and picks up the seeds of the weeds and carries them towards the garden. In a frenzy, she not only cuts down all the weeds around her, but also all her flowers.

Schöpfungsgeschichte - Creation Story

In this amusing film from the early days of cinema, the process of creating an animated film is vividly reflected in the creation of the world and man by God's hand. A certain liberality of the 1920s is expressed here when God and his helper voyeuristically enjoy the sexual acts of Adam and Eve behind the bushes and comment on them accordingly. In the end, it becomes clear that this unusually long narrative film was dedicated to an advertising purpose: to sell clothes to those expelled from paradise.

Mecanomagie

Wieder Holung

The “busy-ness”, energy, growth, and that nagging scratchy feeling of bare skin on grass, feelings that are the integral part of the intimate experience of adolescence.

Water Nymph

Inspired by Slavic mythology and folklore, the film tells the story of the soul of a young woman reborn as ‘Rusalka’, a water nymph. Rusalka´s inability to accept her own fate and the desire for the warmth of the human heart lead her to the world of the living, to which, unfortunately, she is unable to adapt.

Don't Feed the Unicorn

While foraging in a mystical forest, Junior, a young troll, decides to secretly feed a wild unicorn, despite his dad’s warnings not to. The unicorn begins following him for more and more food, growing increasingly persistent and manic before finally getting caught by Senior. Senior finishes the bag of snacks, causing the unicorn to get enraged and take him for her next meal. Senior gets dragged away to the unicorn’s evil cave lair, where Junior has to come to the rescue.

Through the threads of a crocheted and knitted world, ‘Ever Still Here’ tells the story of maternal and filial love, and of the interconnection between spirits. In the midst of grief, it seeks to offer hope.

Circle

The girl draws a circle on the ground. Passersby step into it, one by one. Soon the circle is full of people, struggling to stay within. Once the girl returns and erases the circle, people start heading their way.

Lines

An aggressive battle unfolds between red and dark blue. The borderlines between the colors vibrate with tension as they fight for their lives.

Body of a shadow

While still asleep a woman is dragged from her house by a huge black mass. She is taken to a meadow where she finds a group of different women and girls existing with the stillness and sporadic impulsiveness of a clan of cows that were never tamed. The woman spends the night imitating the bovine behavior of the group until dawn, when the group merges—also absorbing the woman—into a homogeneous body that is revealed to the viewer as the enormous black mass at the beginning. The mass moves back to town to take a new woman at nightfall.

The Long coming of the fire

In ‘The Long Coming of the Fire’, a short animation inspired by the poem of the same name by the poet Atso Shopov, the director of the film confronts his father's terminal illness and the transience of life. The film is mainly composed of animated MRI scans of the now late parent.

I died in Irpin

24 February 2022. My boyfriend and I fled from Kyiv to Irpin. We spent 10 days in a blockaded city and managed to escape with the last evacuation convoy. Time passed but the feeling that I died in Irpin never left me since then. The film reconstructs this true story of survival through a personal and subjective lens.

The Painting

A short film made using pinscreen animation, ‘The Painting’ explores the 1652 portrait of Queen Mariana of Austria by Velázquez. Michèle Lemieux demonstrates incredible mastery of the pinscreen, playing with shadow and light to evoke the tragic fate of Mariana, who was married to her uncle at the age of 14. Both painful and tender, this experimental work is a poem of a film: a meditation on the brutality of institutionalized incest and art’s power to capture the soul.

Wiener Bilderbogen Nr. 1

Typical features of early animation cinema of the 1920s in this film are, in addition to the erotic content, the depiction of the animator's hand and thus the visualization of his production method. Particularly impressive, however, is the visionary quality of this work, which anticipates all technological achievements in communication technology up to the 21st century.
